Alberto Vargas inspired me for this design. He was a Peruvian-American illustrator who became one of the defining artists of the classic American pin-up. The interesting part isn’t simply that he painted beautiful women. It’s how selectively realistic he was. Look at the images above. The anatomy is convincing, but surprisingly little information is actually present. Skin isn’t filled with pores or photographic texture. Instead, Vargas constructs the body from large, incredibly smooth transitions. While working on this tattoo, I kept thinking that women might be God’s most beautiful creation. There is something incredible in the way strength and softness can exist together in the body, in movement, and in character.
