UNDERSTANDING IREZUMI — EPISODE 1 Where you place a tattoo can be just as important as what you choose to tattoo. A Japanese Irezumi composition isn't designed on a blank sheet of paper and simply placed onto the body. The body becomes part of the design. The artist has to consider the shape of the body, the direction of the subject, the size of the tattoo, the background, and how everything will move together. This becomes especially important with sleeves, backpieces, chest pieces, and larger projects that develop over multiple sessions. A strong tattoo isn't only something that looks good in a photograph. It should work with the body. That's one of the principles behind traditional Japanese tattoo composition that I'll continue exploring throughout this series. Episode 1 — Why Placement Matters. Save this post if you're planning a larger Japanese tattoo.
